Elkton Board Passes Property Tax Rate

By Sheila Holden

The property tax rate, for both real and personal, in Elkton will stay the same as last year’s after three readings and an unanimous vote each time by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen Thursday of last week.

Mayor Bill Ware said he was glad for the citizens of Elkton that the board could keep the tax rate the same, which is 33 cents per every $100 of real and personal property.

The fiscal year for 2007-08 begins July 1.

In other new business at the June meeting:

• The board unanimously voted to pay $540.88 from the general fund in payment for lumber used for the new Elkton Fire Hall.

• The board also unanimously agreed to pay volunteer fire department member Greg Merrell $300. It was noted that Merrell’s services ranged from drawing up plans for the fire hall to helping with general construction work. He is scheduled to help with nailing up sheetrock that will be installed soon.

Alderman Payton Blade said Merrell didn’t expect any compensation, but Blade said Merrell had worked hard and deserved it.

• It was announced that the city’s charter changes had been approved by the state legislature. Alderman Doug Turner made a motion to accept the changes, which was seconded by Blade, and the motion carried 4-0. Alderman Theresa Abernathy was absent from the meeting.

In old business, the board voted to $500 to the Giles County Tourism Foundation to help with printing brochures.

The amount doubled last year’s donation. Tourism Foundation President Bridgett Weisser attended the May meeting asking the Elkton board for the increased total. The reason, she said, is because of the increased cost of printing.
